Artist’s Statement

anitaCreative work has been a passion for all of my adult life. The natural world is the source of my imagery, and I consider myself an Abstract/Realist. Although my primary medium is oil, I am process oriented and love experimenting, mixing different media, including encaustic paints.

I paint land/seascapes because I’m inspired by the interplay of light and space around water and land. The constant ebb and flow of the tides create compelling spatial relationships, while the changing light brings endless awareness of time, shifting mood and atmosphere. In the still lifes, my interest and concerns are centered on close observation, merging spontaneity and structure through line, form, and especially color. I am also interested in the relational aspects between things.

Whether looking from afar or up close, my vision is to create images that resonate in a balanced way between what I objectively observe, my inner feelings, and, ideally, a shared experience with my viewers.

A quote by Edward Hopper resonates with me. “Art is the outward expression of an inner life in the artist, and this inner life will result in his personal vision of the world”.
